One of the biggest fears of women when it comes to health is ovarian cyst. It seems like no woman is safe from this dreaded illness especially for those between the ages 30-60. In fact, millions of women are being afflicted with ovarian cyst. In order to at least lessen the impact of the symptoms in case you already have it, you need to fully understand this kind of disease.

What is an ovarian cyst? It is actually a pouch or sac that grows in the ovary. The cyst usually has fluid or hard elements and sometimes it contains both. You are vulnerable to this ovarian disease whether you are a single or married woman.

But how does an ovarian cyst develop? The growth of the cyst is actually connected with the monthly cycle of ovulation of women. During this process, a hormone is released in the ovary needed to produce follicles, which is like a pouch container that holds young eggs and fluids. When the egg finally grows, the follicles break and the egg is released. Functional cyst is one of the common types of ovarian cyst. It is quite difficult to detect this type of cyst because its symptoms do not show early on. Majority of women who suffer from functional cyst are not even aware they are afflicted. However, some of the symptoms are abdominal pain, irregular menstruation, and constant urge to vomit. Sometimes, the cyst may just disappear. But it is still wise to consult your doctor immediately to check if your cyst is shrinking or not.

Polycystic ovaries are another type of ovarian cyst that you must know. In this type of ovarian cyst, the follicle does not rupture. This is the most common type of ovarian cyst to date, and a lot of women are suffering from it. In fact, it is also one of the leading causes of infertility in women.

Another type of cyst on ovary is called Dermoid or Teratoma. It can be described as having a mature skin with hair follicles and sweat glands. It is actually almost the same as the ones present on skin tissue, which may also contain fats. Usually, this type of cyst is benign while the malignant type is very rare. Younger women are prone to develop this type of cyst which can grow up to six inches in diameter.

Another type of cyst on ovaries is the Endometroid which causes pain in the pelvic region during menstruation. This happens when the endometrial tissue or the membrane that forms the inner layer of uterin wall develops inside the ovaries. This also causes infertility.

It is vital that you become aware of ovarian cyst symptoms. Seek your physician immediately if you detect some of its symptoms. In order to alleviate your condition, early detection of the disease is necessary.
